Wild Stinging Nettles are starting to burst their little spring heads up around the Pacific Northwest. These nutritive greens are packed with protein and chlorophyl to guide us through to the lighter days ahead.

Look for their green jagged leaves poking up in partial shade. They thrive in rich soil, moist woodlands, disturbed areas, along partially shaded trails and river edges.

Their little hairs pack a punch when you brush against them. If you are feeling assertive and prepared for a possible sting, firmly pinch off the tops. Otherwise, use a cloth, gloves or clippers to keep your fingers safe.

Harvest just the tender tops, and use in a fresh or dried nutritive tea. You can also use them as you would kale or spinach. Lightly steaming or frying takes the sting away and leaves them safe for your enjoyment.
