An Introduction to Hand Quilting and Its History
With Lauren MacDonald of Working Cloth
Sunday July 22
This process focussed workshop will teach you the fundamentals of hand-quilting so that you have all the skills needed to make your own. Participants will create a small stitched panel and will learn how to hand quilt as well as choose appropriate textiles, wadding and threads, rotary cutting, basting methods, and will be shown how to finish their pieces with binding.
You will also learn about the nature and intricacies of whole cloth quilting, trapunto, and about the history of quilted objects.
Fabric, cotton sashiko thread, thimbles, and needles will be provided.
Working Cloth was founded in May 2016 with the intention of bringing an appreciation for textile processes and craft practise to a wider audience. Years working in the London fashion industry accompanied by a sustained interest in art, craft, science and history deepen the context that Working Cloth brings to the creation and analysis of textile objects. Lauren's work shops span cultural, heritage and contemporary fashion practise and contain a theoretical component that grounds the practical techniques in history and theory.
